Mr. Saul Eslake brings over 45 years of distinguished experience as a professional economist, providing invaluable expertise in economic development, policy design, and international research collaboration. He began his career in 1979 at the Australian Treasury after graduating with First Class Honours in Economics from the University of Tasmania.
Throughout his career, Mr. Eslake has held key positions in both the private and public sectors. He served as Chief Economist at several major institutions, including McIntosh Securities, National Mutual Life, ANZ Banking Group, and Bank of America Merrill Lynch (Australia and New Zealand). In these roles, he developed a reputation for delivering high-level economic analysis across global markets, with a particular focus on Asia and the Pacific.
He also played a central role in government advisory, having led the Victorian Commission of Audit—a major inquiry into the public finances of Australia’s second-largest state—and served as Director of the Productivity Growth Program at the Grattan Institute, a leading non-partisan policy think tank.
Since 2015, Mr. Eslake has operated his own consultancy, Corinna Economic Advisory, based in Hobart, Tasmania. Through this platform, he provides strategic advice to a wide range of clients including government agencies, academic institutions, and private enterprises.
Mr. Eslake has also served on numerous national councils and advisory panels over the years, including the Australian Government’s Trade Policy Advisory Council, the Foreign Affairs Council, the National Housing Supply Council, and the Australian Statistics Advisory Council. He is currently a member of the Parliamentary Budget Office’s Expert Advisory Panel and the Australian Taxation Office’s Tax Gap Expert Advisory Panel.
A long-standing advocate for evidence-based reform, Mr. Eslake is known for his thought leadership on a wide range of issues—from tax reform and housing affordability to education policy and intergovernmental fiscal relations. He has also served as a non-executive director for several major public and private entities, including Hydro Tasmania and the Gas and Fuel Corporation of Victoria.
