Dr Muhammad Issyam Ismail

An Islamic Finance enthusiast with a background in Civil Law and Shariah Law (double degrees), and a Master's degree in Islamic Finance. Among the professional qualifications I currently hold are: 

1. Chartered Banker and Professional Banker by Asian Institute of Chartered Banker: both took in one 
 seating and finished both within one year only.
2. Certified Shariah Advisor and Auditor by AAOIFI: took the exam in the Arabic language.
3. Certified Banking Auditor
4. Module 6 (Malaysia Stock Market & Securities Law) and Module 7 (Financial Statement Analysis and 
 Asset Valuation) by Securities Industry Development Corporation (SIDC).

I am currently serving under Solutioning, Islamic Wholesale Banking (CIMB Islamic), where I mainly provide structuring and solutioning services for the Islamic capital market and investment banking products. I am also serving as the secretary for the Investment Account Oversight Committee (secondary position). 

Previously, I provided Shariah Advisory services for the Islamic Capital Market/Wholesale Banking segment (Sukuk, Treasury, Structured Products, etc.) and Commercial Banking at my current bank. I have provided Shariah advisory services for over 30 Sukuk programmes and 10 Islamic Treasury products. Among my notable projects were the Farm Fresh IPO (2022), Malaysia's world-first Sovereign Dollar Sustainability Sukuk (April 2021), the United Kingdom 500 million Pound Sovereign Sukuk (April 2021), Khazanah Global USD Sukuk (May 2021), Hibiscus Petroleum Islamic Preference Share (2020). I also have experience providing Shariah advisory services for Commercial Banking, Transaction Banking, and Consumer Banking at my current and previous banks.

Besides Shariah Advisory, I had experience in business strategy and planning during my time as a special officer to the CEO (a double duty on top of the main Shariah Advisory duty) at my previous bank. 

I was involved in many academic publications and research projects with prominent Islamic finance figures. Among them are Dr Aznan Hasan (who was also the supervisor for my master's degree), Dr Rusni Hassan, and Dr Azman Mohd Nor on various topics relating to Islamic finance and Islamic Capital Market.
